STARSTRUCK
February 9, 2010
If you're a fan of the Disney
Channel, you must have heard about the latest Disney Channel
Original Movie, Starstruck. It's not showy
High School Musical-type songs, but more modern, pop songs.
More than half the songs are performed by the film's star,
Sterling Knight, best known to Disney fans as Chad Dylan Cooper
in Sonny With a Chance (I love that show!). Is it a
prerequisite that you've got to sing before you can star in a
Disney Channel series? Well, Sterling does fine in the seven new
songs he's featured in. Whether or not you're starstruck by the
cast, you just may enjoy this latest Disney CD. |

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG:
TIANA AND HER PRINCESS FRIENDS
November 23, 2009
What if all of Disney's princesses
got together and recorded a brand new album? The result would
probably be Tiana and Her
Princess Friends. This new album isn't just using songs
from the original soundtracks, but features the princesses
singing new songs. Snow White sings "Dare to Dream." Ariel sings
"Beyond My Wildest Dreams," a song from the Broadway version of
The Little Mermaid. Maybe I've just got Frog fever
right now, but my favorite track is Princess Tiana singing,
"Down in New Orleans." Not from the film's soundtrack, this
version is exclusively on this album. If that appeals to you,
hop to it and get yourself a copy! |

THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG
November 23, 2009
The Princess and the Frog
CD is sure to get you bouncing, or hopping, in your seat.
Although Randy Newman provides the music for this new film,
don't expect "You've Got a Friend in Me," and for that matter,
this doesn't follow in the footsteps of "Someday My Prince Will
Come," or "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes." That's because
this story takes place in New Orleans, the birth place of jazz!
The pop single "Never Knew I Needed" by Ne-Yo is the first track
on the album, although it appears during the film's end credits.
(I've actually shuffled it to the bottom on my iPod.) Then you
get the eight jazzy vocal tracks followed by seven tracks of the
film's instrumental score. I've already listened to this CD over
and over, and I think it's toadly awesome!

SONGS TO CELEBRATE 25 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
November 3, 2009
Do you hear what I hear? It's the new
Christmas CD from Disney Records, derived from the great annual
block of programming on ABC television. Each year, it includes
everything from Disney and non-Disney family films to the
traditional TV shows many of us grew up with, such as A
Charlie Brown Christmas, and the Rankin-Bass classic,
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It seems natural that
Disney Records has released "Songs to Celebrate 25 Days of Christmas." Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Alexa Vega,
and Simple Plan perform some of the tunes from some of the more
recent programs, and there are there's also classics such as
"Put One Foot in Front of the Other" from Santa Claus is
Comin' to Town. A few perennial favorites are also in the
mix, such as Andy Williams' "The Most Wonderful Time of the
Year," "Silver Bells" by Bing Crosby and Trudy Erwin, and the
album's finale, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
performed by Ella Fitzgerald, all of which found their way into
the the soundtracks of various films. This album is sure to make
your days merry and bright!

LOS LOBOS GOES DISNEY
October 27, 2009
Following a long tradition of popular
singers and groups performing Disney hits, Los Lobos puts their
spin on some beloved songs.
The track listing is mainly Disney
classics with selections both from films and the theme parks,
including some rarities such as the Haunted Mansion hit
"Grim Grinning Ghosts" to the equally rarely recorded "Ugly Bug
Ball" from Summer Magic. These new renditions don't
try to copy the originals, but offer pleasant new versions in
the style that has become associated with this triple-Grammy
Award winning group. While there's definitely a Latin flavor or
Mexican inspiration to the music, the group seems to have a
unique style of their own. Although I personally had not heard
any Los Lobos music before, I found it completely enjoyable.
It's bueno! |

MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE:
MEESKA MOOSKA MICKEY MOUSE
October 27, 2009
"Choo choo express! Choo choo express!"
This is all I've heard for the last week! Both of my sons are
fans of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse kids TV show, so they
were anxious to listen to this CD. For some reason, my youngest
son immediately took to the song "Choo Choo Express" even though
he had never heard it before. Interestingly, I didn't realize
that the track was performed by the group They Might Be Giants,
whose other Disney releases are big hits in our house. When my
son allows his brother to play other songs, they both truly
delight in the tracks (no "choo choo" pun intended). I don't
know whether it's because they are familiar with the songs or
because it's all the main Disney characters singing, but it's
priceless to see the big smiles that come across their faces
when they listen. In fact, this Mickey Mouse album makes them
grin from ear to ear (pun intended).

THE SHERMAN BROTHERS SONGBOOK
October 13, 2009
This two CD set is a compact history of the Sherman Brothers'
career with Disney from their first Disney hit "Tall Paul,"
right up to their songs from The Tigger Movie. In
addition to the favorites, this has some rarities such as the
theme of the Tokyo Disneyland attraction Meet the World,
and some Disneyland Records versions of songs from their
non-Disney film, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. You will
definite, as one of the song titles states, "Enjoy It!" |

BABY EINSTEIN: ANIMAL FRIENDS
October 6, 2009
My introduction to Baby Einstein was when my son was just a
few months old. The DVD was a gift from someone, and it
completely grabbed his attention. The musical style introduced
classical music in a very child-friendly way, with all the bells
and whistles... literally, yet soothing enough to lull him to
sleep. To this day, my son can pick out Beethoven's songs when
he hears them played by an orchestra. This newest Baby Einstein
audio CD follows in the same style of music, but the theme this
time is all animal songs, from Three Blind Mice to
Turkey in the Straw. Young children will not make the
animal-theme connection since there's no lyrics, but that
shouldn't take away from their enjoyment of the moo-sic. |

THE HAUNTED MANSION (40th
Anniversary)
September 22, 2009
In honor of the attraction's 40th anniversary, Disney has
released this cadaverous collection of creepy old clips from the
various incarnations of the Haunted Mansion attractions around
the world. The main soundtrack includes the talking bride for
the first time along with all the classic narration and sound
effects. The remainder of the album focuses on the music
including the complete grand orchestral score of Disneyland
Paris' Phantom Manor. My favorite track on this album
is "The Ghostly Music Box," heard both in Anaheim and Paris.
It's hauntingly beautiful... I'm dead serious! |

THE STORY AND SONG FROM
THE HAUNTED MANSION
September 22, 2009
When Disneyland's Haunted Mansion debuted in 1969, this
story album was released as both a souvenir and a promotional
product. Today it's creepy and it's kitchy and it combines the
charm of the 1960s with sounds from the classic attraction.
Robie Lester and Ron Howard (as Karen and Mike) explore the
mansion, and classic Disney, with the fantastic Disney Legend
Thurl Ravenscroft narrating. Thurl, who has appeared in
countless Disney movies and attractions is the lead singing bust
in the Haunted Mansion attraction. Taking over the role of the
Ghost Host for the album is another Disney voice veteran, Pete
Renoudet. You can read some of my interviews with Pete in my
interviews section. Also,be sure to read my interview with
Disney Records Producer Randy Thornton who talks about
restoring this classic album. |

PHINEAS AND FERB
September 22, 2009
This new CD features a wide arrangement of songs, all taken from
the various episodes of the hit TV series, Phineas and Ferb. The most popular song, not only in my household but
in a nationwide countdown is "Gitchee Gitchee Goo," which, by the
way means "I love you." The extended version is on here, along
with an extended version of the theme song, and it didn't miss
any of my sons favorites, either. My oldest son loves "Gitchee
Gitchee Goo" and the touching "Little Brothers," while my
youngest loves "E.V.I.L. B.O.Y.S.," sung by a
distorted-voiced Candace, usually voiced by Ashley Tisdale,
except in this version, due to her allergy to wild parsnips, of
course. This Phineas and Ferb is ferbulous! |

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS: HERE COMES
SCIENCE
September 22, 2009
They Might Be Giants once again brings their wacky humor along with great music to Walt Disney Records for another educational CD. TMBG is a big hit in our family, and this album follows in the same style of their previous Disney releases Here Come the ABCs and Here Come the 123s. The theme this time is “science,” and this covers everything from elements to photosynthesis. Not to sound cliché, but this CD really does make learning fun, and my kids are proof they really will learn from it! It’s fun to hear my seven year old tell people the difference between speed and velocity! They Might Be Giants, in fact, they are giants in my home! |

TINKER BELL AND THE LOST TREASURE
September 22, 2009
The Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure CD is
actually a twofer, because you not only get the four original
songs from the film's soundtrack, but other tracks inspired by
the film. The musical style blends together nicely in a kind of
modern pop style with a Celtic touch. This CD really takes
flight with a variety of the hottest teen singers today,
including American Idol Jordin Sparks and Disney Channel
sensations Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Alyson Stoner and Tiffany
Thornton. |
